rear end oil in H's M's

What kinda oil should be put in the rear ends of the H & M i dont know whether to put 80-90 or hy tran. thanks in advance.

If hy-tran is suitable for TA tractors why couldn't/shouldn't it be used in all tractors? There is no difference between the SMTA and SM rear ends other than the torque to my knowledge.
Couldn't your run whichever is cheaper? At least you can pour hy-tran :D

well that was kinda my question. i didnt think there was any differance but thats what i was asking.thanks for the info though

80W-90 0r 85W-140 or hytran any one ot them is just fine. My self I keep UFT on hand so as to have something that will work in all of them other wise I would have to have to much on hand and that gets hard to do plus you have to look at to many jugs to see if you have what you want so if you use UTF you have it

Hytran is the equivalent of about 10W. If you replace all the seals and gaskets first it is probably ok, otherwise leaks are likely. Shifting gears will be more difficult because the Hytran does not offer much resistance and 90W helps slow them down. (Ask my 460 that has to have a Hytran equivalent). It also costs more than gear oil, and has no advantage in non-TA tractors that I know of.

W6 is about the same as the M, different gear ratios, etc, W9 is bigger. All use something like 90W. You only need hytran in IH tractors when the hydraulics do not have their own reservoir, or the tractor has a TA.

In my smta, Does the TA use the same oil as the rear end. Does the same oil flow from the TA to the rear end. Is there any separation.

It is all one reservoir, the same oil lubes the TA, transmission and final drive. The PTO has a seperate oil reservoir though.

He (and others) already answered that in your post "smta" from a couple days ago. At least his answer was consistant. ;)

"M" non TA tractors hold 13 gallons of 90 weight per the manual. You do not want the 140 in cold weather , to hard to shift.

Hytran is great stuff but very costly and "not" used in this application.

If you need to buy 90 weight find a oil depot that sells heating oil , diesel etc etc. They sell a 16 gallon barrel that is cheaper to by in this way then by the gallon or 5 gallon bucket.

I got 16 gallons of Valvoline 4 years ago for $125.00 at the time i saved around $75.00 buying it this way.

(quoted from post at 09:38:37 03/07/10) Why should hy-tran be used in TA tractors if the owners manual specifies 80w????

Bc International put out todays version of a TSB that stated the TA saw inadequate lubrication when gear oil was used.

I have another question. When draining the old oil is there a way to flush out any sludge left inside. The Super M I have has probably not had oil change in rear end in a long time so, I know it is pretty dirty inside.

Some guys will drain out the old stuff then refill with diesel fuel. Run it around the yard some and drain it again. Then refill with good oil.

Maybe you should go back and read the post. All the answers were to use hy-tran. My question was were they part of the same reservoir and in this one he aswered it :)

Thanks kirk

be careful if you dump diesel or kerosene in there, if the seals are border line now they will leak for sure after you add them.

Go buy 5 gallons of cheap ATF and run the snot out of it. The ATF will clean the inside out very nice.

Drain off about five gallons then add it .

I answered it on the first post. I said they are on the M, but I can't speak for all IH models. Then I said btw use hy-tran, not gear oil. The rest focused on the hy-tran portion.
