460 diesel smoke

I just bought a farmall 460 diesel from my uncle that smokes really bad for about fifteen or so minutes or till it warms up This tractor has done this for at lease 4 years and in the summer to I know this could be a number of things but I was wondering where you guys would start to find the problem The tractor has plenty of power and oil pressure thanks

You did not say what color smoke it was white , gray , black. You did not say how well it started . or how it ran when first started. How long are you holding the glow plugs on for ??? at this time of year you may have to preheat for up to two min. and also hold them on even after the engine has fired for a min. or more to build the heat . It could be that you have some injectors that are not cracking at the correct pressure and slobbering fuel in , you could have cracked pre cups and this will cause it to not fire correctly . You could have a couple bad glow pulgs. You may be low on compression due to wore out sleeves and rings. Could be that the valves are sunk to deep in the head and this will be just enough to throw them off and cause it to be low on compression and smoke till she is coming up on to run temp in the combustion chamber . If it comes down to a rebuild then take the time and do it wright buy doing a complete rebuild by the book and get everything set to spec.'s . When they are done wright they do run sweet . And oh that is good enough is not good enough , being a little excessive compulsive when doing a engine job is not a bad thing and makes for and excellent rebuild .

i would start by making sure all 6 glow plugs are working. even if you have one burnt out it will smoke for a while before clearing up.then do as tractor vet says.

We have had a couple of these and one was new in 1960. When the temerature is in the 30's and 40's they smoke uncontrollably. The stroke is so short that they do not generate enough heat to properly burn the fuel until the block and head get warmed up. So even when they were new they would slobber and smoke until warmed up, during spring and fall weather conditions.
