MD transmission problem?

Took the belly pump out of my MD this morning. Went to line up the driving dog in vertical position so that pump would drop down. Could not turn shaft by hand to get driving dog in vertical position. I would have thought that you could turn shaft freely in neutral. I jacked up both rear wheels and disengaged clutch, but still could not turn pump shaft by hand. Ended up nudged it a little with a pipe wrench. Hope I didn't damage anything. As always, any answers appreciated.

Blocking the clutch down in Neutral should free it. I would wonder which end of it is binding.
Cold temps, and 90 wt oil will be very stiff, so take that into consideration. Jim

The counter shaft is connected (even when the transmission is in neuttral)to the engine unless the clutch is depressed. So to turn the shaft, you have to tie the clutch down so it is disengaged. If you disengaged the clutch and could not turn the shaft, put the PTO in gear and then put something on the PTO to rotate the shaft. I use part of an old PTO universal joint with splines that fit on the PTO.
