loose sleeve in H

I took the head off my H to do some repairs to it and when I was cleaning up the block to put the head back on when I turn the motor over one sleeve will slide up. I was wondering if that was going to be a problem or not. I know the proper thing to do is buy a new set and redo the motor but this tractor does not get used hard or very much. My question is can I put the head back on and run it with no problems or will I break something later on. I tried to check the archives but I can't find anything. Thanks Bob

We had one like that many years ago when I was in HS. We "gooped" all the sleeve that showed above the deck with a gasket sealer product called "permatex". (I don't know if its still made.) We then forced the sleeve down into the grove in the block, whipped away all the permatex that squeezed out (that was a job) and put the head back on. It ran for years like that. I would talk to your machinist at your local auto machine shop as to what he would recommend. You may be able to use loctite. The problem with the way the sleeve moving it may be pulled down by the piston and then the connecting rod will do a lot of damage and may break the engine block along with the sleeve. Hal

I had one bouncing up and down in a Ford after a rebuild. I was told to get Loctite Sleeve Sealer which I did, I glued them in with that and its been good for about 5 years now. I bought two tubes but it took only one.

As El Toro indicates, there is danger in leaving it loose. The holes are select fit at the factory with marks near each bore from A to E. The A is smallest. E is largest. Typical sleeves from most resellers are for A or B holes. Find a sleeve (or have one made by LA Sleeve inc.) to fit the larger hole. They are out there, ask the sales people here on YT to see if they can help. Jim
