Fellows our FFA is doing a 400 farmall. After hearing rummars that it had a new tourque installes shortly before it being parked in fence row. We tracted down the people who parked it . They said they had bought it used from a jockey who told them that "those tourques always are going out so don,t use it " so they didn't . My Question is is there any way to check it before we put the bolt the front end back on or will we have to put it all together and then split it again to fix the tourque? Jerry

While you have the tractor apart, remove the TA housing and then the TA itself. Check the TA clutch for serviceability, follow the service manual instructions when taking the TA apart. Examine the ramp and rollers, the rollers will wear and develop flat spots, if you find rollers with flat spots, then you can either replace just the rollers with slightly oversized ones or replace the ramp and rollers as a set. When I rebuilt the TA in my 400 I put in a new ramp and rollers, it cost about $130.

As Nebraska Kirk posted, the most common failure is the rollers getting flat spots. The only time these wear is when the TA is in the direct (forward) position or allowed to over run in the TA position. If the TA is not used regularly the rollers are not forced to rotate as they do when they lock up. Never using the TA can cause it to fail faster than if it is used regularly.

Grab your t/a flywheel. It should lock when turning counter clockwise and turn free clockwise. If it slips at all the ramp and rollers need replaced. While it's apart it probably wouldn't hurt to pull the t/a out and check the seal surface on the carrier also ( good indication of a rebuilt) it should be a smooth cut surface.
