I have a 450 that appears to be leaking hytran into the PTO case. I assume a seal is out some where, is this a big deal to fix? Any suggesions?

Thanks.

The front seal on the PTO unit needs to be replaced, You will have to drain the rear end, then remove the PTO unit and remove the front seal and install a new one. It is not a big job.

When you say front seal, do you mean the seal around the shaft in front of the front bearing retainer?

Thanks for the help.

ou don't have to drain it if you recently changed it. Just park it with the nose downhill. Done it on my dad's 450 when the PTO went outta it.

There are two seals. Rear seal is at the inch and three eights splined PTO shaft that points rearward. Front seal faces the front of tractor and the input shaft that passes through transmission.

How do you know it is leaking internally? I would take 10W or Hy-Tran equivalent and pour it through the breather threads until the IPTO gearbox is full. Watch the level for several days. If there is no leakdown, remove the excess oil thru the level plug on left side of IPTO gearbox. If you have a fast-hitch, the cylinder will have to be removed.

I have never seen a thread subject like yours. It doesn't seem to be a frequent malfunction.

I've had to replace the inner and outer seal in the pto , park it on a hill and pull it, weight is about 125 pounds , beats draining .
