I was wondering if the factory wfe off of a 450 would be the same as what was offered for a SMTA? I was thinking of putting the wfe under one of mine that currently has a nfe but i would like to use the newer style with the tie rods behind. I found a 450 in a wrecking yard that has a good wfe but I only want to get it for the SMTA if it is the same as what would have been offered from the factory. Would any SMTA"s have came with the tie rod out front WFE from factory? Thanks, Mike.

The factory WFE for the SMTA, 400 and 450 would all be the same - with steering linkage behind the axle. mike

Check out a new Schwartz. You might be able to slide a new front end under it for just a little more money than a used one.

Look at his name. He probably makes them!!! He is just checking out the competition ;)

Exactly. Especially if that used wide front needs a bunch of new parts. Replacement parts for wide front axles add up very quickly.

Ha Ha, I wish, I am afraid I come from the poor and broken down Schwartz family. I was thinking that $300 was probably a pretty fair price for a good used IH wfe, what do you think? What is everyones opinion of a SPEECO wfe? Thanks Mike.

MAKE SURE the one you're looking at is really in good shape. I am currently in the middle of a complete rebuild of an aftermarket WF under my MTA, so far, I'm up close to $400. Granted, that includes some serious fabrication, and machine shop work, and will be better than new when done, but it get's expensive real fast... Over $100 in bearings/bushings for the verticle spindles alone...

And yes, MTA's had the tie rods out front...

Mike a original IH type wide front used on a farmall 450 is the same as a original type SMTA IH wide front. A decent shape one from a 450 for $300 is a good deal.

Speeco and Schwartz are the same thing now, and parts are readily available for both.

A brand new Schwartz to fit a Farmall M through 450 will run in the neighborhood of $1,200.

A used wide front, in excellent condition, will cost between $600 to $800 or higher. A $300 wide front will be pretty much all worn out, unless you are very, very lucky.

$300 for a IH wide front is pretty cheap, even it you need to replace tie rod ends or other minor parts. I paid $715 for a complete IH widefront with hubs, rims and tires, I had to replace one tie rod ball joint, but other than that it was in good shape.
