H muffler options

I am planning to buy a muffler from the folks who run this site, and I am looking at the options. They sell 5-1/2" and 6" dia. round mufflers and an oval. I've never seen an oval on an H, but I don't know much about it. I'd like to get one that would actually make it run a little quieter if I can, so would the bigger one be quieter or louder than the smaller one? Any advice will be much appreciated.

the 'correct' one is the smaller round one, the large one is for the M and up. As for sound i have both and can not really tell and difference between them. If you want a less decibels look for one thats full baffle. Most of the ones sold today you can look right though and are only baffled on the sides.
Its up to you really what you want in the end.

If you're wanting an extremely quiet muffler and want the correct original sound get one from Marks Tractors. 217-694-4735 He makes these and has them in aluminized or stainless steel. I have the stainless on my H and it's amazing how quiet it really is. I'm told that these are made exactly to IH original blueprints and have the "correct" sound.

I'm not sure the "correct" sound and quiet are one in the same. I have seen his mufflers and they are very nice. A couple guys in our pulling club bought them at RPRU in last year. I never paid attention to how loud they were.

The original H muffler is quieter than the M because the H muffler has a baffle inside, and the outlet is smaller diameter. The M muffler has the larger diameter outlet and has NO baffle, the exhaust goes straight through.

OEM also has the "correct" H mufflers with the short body and smaller outlet. They're quite a bit less expensive than Mark's, only $40 if you wait for one of their frequent 20% off sales when I bought mine.

Only thing about them is that they are LOUD (no baffle at all, may as well be a straight pipe), and the paint sucks. The paint was bubbling and peeling off within 30 seconds of starting the tractor.

For tractor rides I like a three ft straight pipe. Went to plow day last year with straight pipe. Went back home to get muffler. Bernie Steffen
