1949 CUB PUT NEW PLUGS, POINTS,CAP ,NEW WIRES. REBUILT CARB. I GOT SPARK , COMPRESSION BUT JUST WILL NOT TRY TO START EVEN SHOT ETHER STILL DIDNT TRY. IF MAG WAS NOT FIRING HOT ENOUGH FOR FUEL SHOULD WITH ETHER TO GET SOMETHING . I ALSO CHECKED MAKE SURE WAS ON NUMBER 1 CYLINDER NEED HELP

I know you said that you were on number one. But are you sure that you have it timed correctly. Sure sounds like your out of time one way or the other.

whats the history? was it running before? is it an overhaul? did you have the mag off?has to be on no. 1 Cyl. on COMPRESSION stroke!is it getting the fuel?if it has compression , fuel & spark at the right time you will have an explosion!

BOUGHT FROM FREIND WHO ONLY HAD IT SHORT TIME IT WAS HARD TO START WHEN HE BOUGHT IT . IT SMOKED SO I PUT RINGS IN IT AND DID THE OTHER THINGS TO HELP IT START BETTER WITH NO LUCK. I HAVE CHECKED IT MANY TIMES AND HAD ANOTHER PERSON CHECK TO MAKE SURE ITS ON NUMBER 1 COMPRESSION. WE FEEL ITS TIMED IF NOT CLOSE ENOUGHT SHE SHOULD BACK FIRE POP DO SOMETHING .

Cover the basics:

1-fuel supply, check to make sure you have good flow to carb.

2- spark at plugs / check plugs are they wet?

3- make sure timing is right

4- has to run,if all above is correct.

I have had a similar situation as yours, and yes it turned out to be a timing issue, turned out to be a mess of problems, previous owner had governor gear mark not mated with idler gear, I confirmed this by finding top dead center, removed dist cap, and rotor was pointing at no nipple. it would not fire. just for thought, crazy things can happen, Jim

Pull off one of the plug wires and hold it about 1/4" away from plug while someone makes an attempt to start the engine. Don't forget to have the kill switch in the run position.

You should have a hot blue spark from your plug wire every time that cylinder fires. If that looks ok check to make sure your plug wires are in the correct firing order on the cap as this:
2-1 Rotor rotates CW.
4-3

Pull No1 sparkplug near the radiator and hold your thumb over the plug hole and bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. You will need a helper. Once No1 is at TDC remove the cap on the mag and see where your rotor is pointing. If its not at your No1 plug tower your mag is out of time.

Don't forget your plug wires are not installed on the cap in the 1,2,3,4 order. They need to go to their corresponding plug from the cap to the correct plug in the sequence shown above once you're at TDC. Hold you hand over the throat of the carburetor and see how much suction you have. If there's not much suction that means you have low intake manifold vacuum.

If you just slapped rings in it, it may not have enough compression. Run a compression check.

Do the plugs get wet with gas after cranking it for a while?

CHECKED THE TIMMING I ALSO MOVED THE MAG AS I WAS TRYING TO START SEE IF I COULD GET SOMETHING . PUT MY HAND OVER CARB HAS PLENTLY SUCHIN EVEN FLOODS BUT PLUGS I DO NOT FEEL GET AS WET AS I THINK THEY SHOULD WHEN I CRANK AND CRANK ON ENGINE. BUT I PUT LITTLE GAS IN PLUG HOLES NO FIRING OF ENGINE STILL WOULDN"T THAT BE SAME AS WET PLUGS ?

I had this very similar problem with my M recently. It was 180 degrees out of time, And I also had a stuck valve. Just triple check your timing. and worse case pull the valve cover off and have someone turn the motor over and make sure all the valve are moving properly.

Forgot to mention. once you are 100% sure that you have everything in order. Try pull starting it. Sometimes if the engine hasnt been run in sometime. the starter wont turn it fast enough to get her going. good luck
