ignition problems

I have a 1946 H that has the small, 5 inch by 2 inch coil. It will not start or run with the coil wire attached to the distributor, if I remove it from the distributor and leave it about 1to 2 inches free it will start and run. Am I correct in assuming that the coil is bad?

A more likely scenario is that the sparkplugs are fuel fouled from a rich mixture or oil fouled from worn oil control rings.

No smoke when running and has been starting up real easy. Problem showed up after sitting for a couple of month while I recuperated from an operation.

Maybe moisture in the cap? If it throws a spark that far the coil can't be too bad. What I like to do is open and shut the points while holding the wire 3/8 - 1/2 inch from the tractor and see if it throws a nice blue flame.

Did you have to use the choke a lot to get it running after it sat for a couple months? If so, the plugs may be fouled from the old gas deposits. If the spark checks out good at the plug wire ends, I would be looking for new plugs.

I would check the cap (rotor tip also) for carbon traces or cracks or moisture and dry it well with a hair dryer n try her again. If that dont help try a new set of plugs as they may be fouled. If the coil wire always throws a good blue spark I dont think its the problem.
