F 14 Farmall

I have an F-14 restored, and have two issues with it. The first one is that it is hard starting, usually I hook up a belt to the pulley and start it from my other tractor. Cranking by hand will rarely get it started. The second issue is that when I do get it started, it will run smoothly for about ten to fifteen minutes and just die like I pulled the plug wires off. Here's what Has all been done. Carb has been gone through completely. Head has been off with valves done. Fuel tank and lines are clean and open. Fuel pump has been rebuilt. New plugs and wires, not the carbon ones. Mag has new coil, points, condenser, bearings and the impulse spring seems okay. I've got another new condenser I'm going to try because it seems like the stopping issue might have something to do with heat.

A F 14 carb is more critical than you think.Sounds like the float is sticking or the needle valve. If the float is not set properly it will be hard to start.Timing is very important,With out using a static timing light trial and era has been the best bet.Only make one adjustment at a time

When it dies check for spark right after. If it is weak it is the mag. If it is good it would be a fuel problem.

I had similar problems with my F14. Found a lot of corrosion in the fuel line and wasn't getting enough fuel. I put on a new fuel line and problem went away. Concerning the hard starting I've found mine starts better with hotter plugs. I use D21 in mine. Mine starts well if run every couple of weeks but longer than that it is real hard to start without a lot of cranking.

Fought mine for years. Finally got a new float from Rice, and a set of Autolite 3077s in her made her purr like a kitten, and usually starts on/by the third crank. I set the advance just off of "OFF", throttle about half way, choke it two pulls "up" on the crank, and then unchoke it for the last pull.

You most likely have multiple issues. A timing issue, and weak spark. Timing advance on the mag is 35* BTDC. That is very important. I fought with mine for literally for months. The spark may "look" good and hot, but most likely isn"t as hot as it appears.

The only way you will ever get the timing absolutely correct is with a timing light with advance. Very simple procedure.
