been reading the owners manual, when sitting on the seat and starting a 51md the decomp lever needs to pushed foward then pulled back for diesel? or is it back to start then pushed foward to diesel?????

It's been 35 years but my Super MD was foward to start on gas then after about one min pull back the lever to run on diesel.

pushed forward to start and after engine is warm enough to run on diesel pulled back to run on diesel. RichH

For starting on gas. Switchover lever (decompression and other things) is pushed forward. Speed control lever on LH side of steering wheel shaft all the way down in diesel shut off position. When switch over lever is pushed forward, decompression valves are opened, ignition is activated, carburator float is released so gas can flow and manifold butterflys are set to allow air to pass through carb. That is what happens if all is working correctly. When the lever is back, decompression valves are closed (diesel postion), carb float is locked up to stop gas flow, butterflys are set to prevent air from going through carb and ignition is deactivated. Some manuals I have seen are not correct and say the opposite of this. I think maybe the W series tractors or the Orchards operate the opposite way.

thats what ive been doing and thought it was but he manual i have said the opposite just wanted to check didnt want to f*** something up. thanks.

Jim,
When you make a post you should really put more than just the tractor model you in the title. Farmall MDs are the exception to this rule bc we will read anything about our tractors. If you were to title a thread Farmall H you would not get nearly the views and info bc a lot of people don't know what you want to know about a Farmall H. Typical forum etiquitte suggests posting "Farmall MD Decompression Lever" or "Farmall MD Shutdown" It is not vitally important, but it will get you more views.

I have a 49 MD and a manual also. I have read it exactly the way you have and it reads completely backwards. Forward for gas start and back for diesel.
