farmall h governor

i had valves ground in head and put it back together i put governot shaft into slot in carb , but it idles but, when i advance the throttle lever it won;t back down unless i shut off ignition .. i can't figure it out any help will be appreciated.. thanks jim

So did I. Fortunately, I got back behind the tractor to shut the
engine off before it took off skyward, if you know what I mean.
Just took it back off, realigned the tab and we were back in
business.

on the shaft there is a square shaft that goes into the slot in carb, right?? the first time i didn't have it aligned and the motor wouldn't idle, now i think i do and it idles, but when i advance the throttle and then put it back to idle it doesn't idle unless i shut motor down and restart it.. the metal shaft is supposed to go into the slot???? i can adjust the idle with screw, but it doesn't go back to idle if i advance it thanks stumped

Yes, the little "tang" on the governor shaft fits into the slot on the carburetor throttle shaft. From the way you are describing the symptoms, you missed getting that tang into the slot. You probably got the tang below the slot, where it will still make contact with the throttle shaft and allow you to speed up the engine, but since that tang is not IN the slot, you cannot slow the engine back down.

i took the cover off the top of governor, where the pipe goes to front of head,, i can control the carb and speed of engine thru there , so i must be in tang ,there is probably 5/16 play or more in vertical rod from governor, wheni got this tractor it never ran so i don't know the story but i suspect there maybe a problem with governor all the external linkages are right i'm stumped i thought i would take teh cover off governor and see if something is loose any suggestions thanks jim

The movement of the vertical rod is what controls the carb via the governor. It maybe something that is NOT loose (but should be)inside the governor. Take off the side cover and check the spring. The spring is attached to 2 arms. The one on the left is for setting high/low speeds for the governor. The one on the right works the vertical rod to the carb. There is also a shaft that runs side to side. Make sure the 2 weights on the shaft are intact and movable. Work the arm on the right and you should see the bearing on the right side of the shaft move to the left. When the arm is returned to where the spring is loose the bearing should return to the right. If it is slow to respond or not moving at all try spraying the area down with PB Blaster or such while working the parts back and forth. If it sat for a while or ran low on oil the lubes may have gummed up.

i took the cover off and everything looks good oil on it, weights are good, bearing moves, doesn't seem to be worn anyhere. there is play in the bottom spring that must be because of the play in vertical shaft.. should i remove the pins in the vertical shaft at top and tighten it i'm sure i have the tang in the carb right as i can control the speed of the engine by pushing and pulling the vertical rod right??? should i tighten the vertical rod ??thanks for your help

hi the book says to adjust the rod with the throttle wide open when it's wide open , there is no play.. i don't think that throttle shaft to carb is hanging up it was clean and i could turn the butterfly in carb easy and the shaft turned easy i don't understand what is going on the exhaust manifold is right the valves are right linkage is not hanging up , they're on right .. maybe green is the answer,, i know wash my mouth out with soap
