Factory Fenders On H?

Very hard to say I my self have yet to see a set of them. I have been told they where an option but I have yet to see one single H or for that matter an M with fenders

Isn't that funny, up here in eastern Ontario I don't recall seeing any Ms or Hs without fenders. I have 4 Hs , a SH, and 2 SMs, all with factory fenders.

Well see you canoks had more money back then the the people in the U.S. Or maybe you guys up that way where afraid of the snow flying off the tires in winter would be to cold LOL. Ya funny how options in one place where common to have on one and in other areas can be as hard as finding hens teeth. Fenders and a lot of tractors like the H, M , 300, 350, 450, etc seldom saw with fenders at least where I have been

Old , you gotta get out more. Rare to see any restored show or parade tractor anywhere without them. And quite a few originals around here in SD have them. And this wasn't exactly Rodeo Drive in 1940!

"Factory fenders" were actually installed by the dealer. I have them on all three I restored.
There is a "non-fatory" reproduaction available now that is just a little different then the original.
There is no way to tell looking at a tractor without fenders if it had a set on when delivered to the customer. Likewise if your tractor has them there is no way to tell if the original owner had the installed wh he bought it.
Just find a set, clean em up, make the mount plated and bushings and install.

I would say it is 50/50 here in WI. It is tough to tell bc a good set of fenders will bring $200 bucks so a lot were stripped off for bar money. Most of the auction tractors come without them...hmm...why do I always see a set on one of the wagons???

Fenders were an option when a farmer ordered an H or M in the late '40s and early '50s. I have a 1950 H with fenders that Dad bought new in Iowa.

I have a copy of the order form (Effective March 20, 1950) that dealers used for ordering tractors; fenders cost $15.75 a pair.

Many farmers decided that was too much so did not order them. Times were tough back then because the economy was still struggling after WWII.

LA in WI

The reason fenders are more plentyfull in some states is because several states had laws that required all tractors shipped to that state to have fenders. It wasn't the law in Iowa but I would say all Cubs,B's,'A's, C's and most H,s and M's were delivered with fenders. Several implements required the removal of them so most of them ended up hanging a building.Back in the 60's I probably collected 15 sets just from the neighbors. For many years they sold at swap meets for 20 bucks a set. The fender mounting extenders were never offered by IH. they are all aftermarket.

Like Old, I have never seen a H or M with fenders except in modern times for "show" or "restored" tractors. I do not beleave there was ever a set sold new on a H or M in the Mississippi Delta.

My dad bought a new H in 52, had fenders, next day, fenders hanging in garage. He said they got in his way. My brother sold them to a friend of mine years later and they are now on a 560. I have the H. No fenders for me.

Old,

It was probably Chad Oxner Dodge back then. It went through several different names. Crutcher Dodge there in Cleveland was owned by one of my uncles. How long were you in Cleveland and what did you do before you retired?

(quoted from post at 18:33:53 03/04/10) So then I bet you knew of the Dodge dealership in Greenville which is where I bought my one and only new car/truck in 1974

I don't know, I'm from SD too. I was born in 1958. In south eastern SD, when I was growing up I can only remember one tractor, a Farmall 300, that had fenders. Most folks had Farmalls, next John Deeres, then a couple of Olivers and MMs. It wasn't until the mid to late 60s that fenders started to appear on a regular basis. I remenber a set on a 656 and a 3020 first, then they were on most tractors.
I think they were too expensive for most farmers (even though they might have cost less than $20. That was a lot of money back in the 40s and 50s).
Actually, I only started seeing fenders on old Farmalls when in recent years at parades and show. I think everyone thinks their tractor needs to have all the bells and whistels even though a lot of tractors were sold with just a few options (belt pulley, PTO, and hydraulics, maybe one set of weights). I think many of the folks who have their tractors completely decked out never even drove one until they were in their 40s or 50s and all their friends had one so they had to get one too. They then thought tractors weren't complete unless they had every available option. It's OK to deck them out if you want, but actually, very few tractors came that way originally.

Because of what I saw growing up, I don't like fenders on Hs and Ms now. In fact, I have 11 tractors from a C to a 450 and only 3 of them, the 300, the 350 (flat tops), and the 450, have fenders. On anything older, they just look out of place to me.

Leo,

I agree with you that fenders look out of place on an older Farmall. I also believe that older Farmalls look much better with a tricycle front end rather than a wide front end. Wide front ends did not become real common untill the 60's in the Delta.
