Thinking About Buying a H

I'm going to buy this Farmall H tractor form an elderly women down the road and I was wondering if any one would know what it is worth? both back rims are rusted out, the tires don't look to bad but the back ones have back weather cracks. I believe the year is 1948, the serial # is 277646.
She said it runs but has no idea what it is worth. I don't won't to cheat her on the price but also I don't what to get cheated my self.
Thanks for every ones help.

looks to be a pretty solid tractor, and not beat up at all. appears to have been a distillate, has an extra hole in the hood for the gasoline starting tank. also has the lever for the shudders in front of the distributor. if it runs, i agree 750 is a fair price, i may go a little higher but need to hear it run. see if the small starting tank is laying around in the barn, and the radiator shudders. looks like they have been removed. the seat has been changed. rusted rear rims are not a big deal, good used can be had pretty cheap, new one for about 200 each. those may be able to have a patch welded in too, but need to get em apart. does have the mason jar pre cleaner, nice touch.

If you put a battery in it and check compression (properly), and it has between 90 and 110 on all 4, it is worth 700. if it is stuck, or has low compression on one or more, 350$ Jim

I agree with the other guys. I just bought an early M for $800.Alittle more beat-up but runs good and has 3 pt and old style wide front

Start it up and run it until the engine gets good and warm - even if you have to buy 5 gallon of fresh gas for it this will tell you a lot about the tractor. She looks pretty good and original but get ready to spend big money for rims and tires on the back-end, probably minimum of $500 up to $1000 depending on what/how you replace with. You will need to fix this right away, those rusted rims could be very dangerous if you put this tractor under a pulling load.

You've got one chance to buy that tractor if you really want it. Offer too little and she'll boot you out the door. Many of these old farm wives are pretty savvy on this kind of stuff, and don't forget that tractor represents a lifetime of work. She may not have any idea what it's worth, but she may "know" its worth more than $500.

See if she'll let you check the tractor over and try to start it. Bring a 12V battery and a compression checker. The carburetor is probably gummed up and will need a cleaning for it to run, but there's very little that can destroy a carburetor beyond repair. Same goes for the ignition system. What's important is if the engine makes good compression.

I would be a little more generous in my offer if all indications are that it'd be a runner with an oil change and a tuneup.

If it won't start and run well, about $400.
If it does start about $700. Point out to her the bad rims and tires, and that cobbled up seat.
If you get it home, expect those tires to be loaded. They ahve a lot of tread on them and I wouldn't worry about the weather checking. I think they will last you a good ten years or more.

That is what I thought about the tires as well. (And the price for that matter) If they hold air and don't have cracks that go to the casing they will last for a LONG time on most tractors. They would last 10 years for Gordo and he actually farms with his! I might even use them for tractor pulling. They would be perfect tires for that since they are so old and have the right amount of tread. They look like 45* bars though...
