i have a 54 super h when it is at full throttle it starts backfiring but it can run at half throttle and lower w/o problems. plugs and wires are new. carb is rebuilt. there is a rebuilt mag on the tractor right now instead of the coil system i don't know if that is the problem. any kelp would be appreciated

Sounds like your timing is off some, try even turning the mag and see if that gets you anything. Switching over from a dist to mag has nothing to do with it, it does not know where it gets its spark from...

Sounds like your timing is not advancing as you throttle up.(Runs good at half throttle and less ).
Check and see if your advance is working .

Like Andrew and others have said it is more than likely just a slight timing adjustment.
It could also be the carb is set too lean for full throttle operation.
When the tractor starts to backfire pull the choke out slowly and see if things improve. If it does you need to set the carb richer.

If your carburetor has that main jet adjusting screw near the bottom of the carb. You should open it one full turn to see if that solves the problem. It may be running too lean. Hal

It's more likely a lean mixture at the load circuit. It causes preignition and heats the engine up. You would never want to pull with it until it's fixed.

When you have a distributor the same thing can happen with a worn shaft or advance.
