Farmall Model

I just picked up an old farmall tractor for free. I has no markings though. It looks to be matbe an A or a Cub. It is one of those smaller farmalls. How can I tell the tractor model and where would the vin or serial number be located on the tractor?

if its an A should be a tag under the seat if not there check the right side of block on top towards the fan should be numbers stamped there if its a cub should be a tag on the front end right hand side

Shouldn't an A have overhead valves and a Cub has them in the side of the head?

FREE! That is awesome. Is the motor stuck? Are the tires junk? WHERE ARE THE PICTURE!?!

When you say smaller tractor, I assume you are meaning an offset where the seat platform is a bit to the right of centerline on the tractor? Could be a cub, A, Super A, B, or one of the smaller hundred series. Assuming it is not a hybid of sorts, if it has a narrow front it may be a B or BN. If wide front and it has a hood that comes off without the gas tank attached to it, then likely a A or SA. If wide front and the hood and tank are a unit...one of the cubs. 100 series are out of my depth a bit without a book in front of me so I'll leave that to someone else. Serial number is very helpful and the locations described are where to look, then compare it to the serial number chart on this site. Nice catch.
