My Farmall dilemma...

I've been in love with farmall's since I could walk. I have a few leads on farmalls down here in Arkansas (I'm in the military but I'm from Wisconsin)

Option A. Farmall M that needs a rebuilt motor (water had been sitting in the motor for who knows how long) but its a complete tractor for $200.

Option B. I know a guy that has 5 Farmall M's and Super M's that he completely redid in 1999 (rebuilt motors, converted to 12 volt, iso hydraulic fittings new tires) for $1200 each.

I probably cant even rebuild that $200 M for less than 1200 bucks! But I cant convince the wife to let me spend the money!

We only have 4 acres so I understand that the M is probably over kill.

Any help?

Edit Also I forgot, the M that needs work my wife said I could buy that but she wont let me spend 1200 on the other one.

Also all these tractors are set up for propane. But the guy that has the rebuilt tractors has an extra gas tank and carb he said he could give me and would be really easy to convert back over to gas.

With only 4 acres , you might want to look at a cub or A or a super A , or a 140, can do so much more with these smaller machines .
Your wife will never understand your love for these old red machines . Dont even try . Just take her to a antique tractor show , see the parade ----make sure she has a good time - then she might have an idea .
My 2 cents worth - good luck

Really its not about use but moreso just using it as a toy. I figure with a loader I can just do odd jobs.

I also have an H that my father gave me sitting up in Wisconsin. But it needs tires, it runs but smokes.

If you can buy M and SM tractors that run good and look good with new tires all the way around for $1200 each you should buy them all. Unless your'e in a low price part of the country you should be able to sell 4 for enough to at least have one free tractor.

No, you can't rebuild an M for $1200!! I figure I got $1200 in just the engine when I rebuilt my M!

$1200 for an M or Super M that was rebuilt with new tires 10 years ago I think is a VERY good deal!! They can't possibly have had very many hours put on them since '99. I would sure try and persuade your wife to let you buy one of the running tractors.

If you were to buy the $200 M, you can eaisly put $1000 in it just trying to fix the bare minimum it needs. Now, if it was me, I would buy it, only because I enjoy fixing them up and have experience working on them.

With all that said , welcome to a fun hobby .Being in the miltary , if you are in NC the 4th of July , come to the Thrashers convention in Denton , thousands of old tractors to see ! Thousand of guys who love those old machines .

My Dad used to take me to the Threshers convention every year in wisconsin and I always loved it!

My wife just gave me the OK (even though she said it was the most stupid thing I could possibly buy)

Anyone convert from propane back to gasoline?

Propane is cool bc not everybody has it. It also makes a ton of power.

Drop me an email if you need some help getting them back. I know some guys that haul equipment here around Janesville that may be able to squeeze one or five on the trailer. I wouldn't mind some pictures, I need a SM to complete my collection.

Hummmm, I dunno.

I bought a M that was in "perfect" condition. Still ended up costing me $5K to get it preped and ready for the field.

$1200 for even a half-arsed "restoration" on an M or Super M sounds too good to be true if you ask me.

Either the guy selling them is a fool or he's hiding something. Here's hoping he's a complete fool.

I was figuring if the tires were decent and you could haul it across america the short way cheap enough you could break even on it. If it was a dud I would put the tires on my MD or H and then sell the M with the crappy tires. :)

The first thing you need to do is Grow some balls. Or is it your wife that"s a drill sergeant in the military?

I don"t even like, want, or need an M.....but if they are all rebuilt and can be had for $1200 each...that"s as close to a gift as you"ll ever get.

I can think of several hundred things dumber to buy than a Farmall M, and I own a bunch of dumb things. I don't have enough ground to justify a Farmall M either. If you want, I could start in on the list but that would be silly.

Wifes! Sometimes gotta just ignore them and do what you want. I bought a 58 IH pickup last august. Wife said I was dumb. I look on Internet every day for old IH stuff. She gets downright fightin mad sometimes and asks me when she can have some new furniture or tile in the kitchen. I tell her to go buy whatever she wants. We need it, I agree. She just can't pull the trigger. Looks at stuff and says "thats too much for a couch.," Or "I don't know what I want." Well, I ain't waiting around for you to make up your mind, honey.
