Here We Go Again

I might sound like a broken record, but I am getting NO JOY!!!
Surely someone must know the answer to this question.
I am rebuilding my 22-36 (1931).
I am looking for a true SERVICE MANUAL.
The best I can do is my copy of "Overhauling McCormick-Deering 10-20 and 15-30 Tractors, As Told by Actual Photographs."
Although good, I don't think this is enough and besides, it does not pertain to the later 22-36, as it is a pre-1929 publication.
I have searched all of the websites that sell manuals, including all of the eBay offerings for the past several months.
THERE IS NOTHING OUT THERE.
What did the service people at the repair shops use?
There isn't even any torque specs or clearance specs for the rocker arms.
Here is what else I have:

1. TC-5-B (15-30 Tractor, 4 ¾” x 6”) Parts Catalog, McCormick-Deering, 15-30 Gear Drive Tractor (TG 99926 and up), a 254 page catalog. “This parts catalog supersedes TC-5-A, which should be destroyed.” Obtained from Binder Books in Oregon.
2. Instruction Book, McCormick-Deering 15-30 H.P., Gear Drive Tractor, a 1928 publication, obtained from Steel Wheel Tractors website.
3. Instructions for operating the McCormick-Deering 15-30 H.P. Gear Drive Tractor, a 1925 publication, obtained from Steel Wheel Tractors website.
I won't post again (unless I get not definitive responses), but I think there must be something better out there.
No?
Thanks,
Tom

Tom,I hear you.As for torque they never used a torque setting, nor a torque wrench. Most bearings were tighten and nuts or bolts were wired. If I remembered on my 10-20 I torqed the head bolts acording to a torque chart, after starting the motor the torque wrench wouldnt fit and I just used a wrench by feel to retorque the bolts that went through the water manifold.I have a friend that toured the IH factory and he said he never seen a torque wrench

Tom,
Sorry to hear that your having trouble finding a Service Manual but it may be that McCormick-Deering/IHC never published a 10-20 Service Manual.
I know (from experience) that JD didn"t publish a Service Manual for their early Unstyled A"s & B"s.
Have you tried the IHC archive at the Univeristy of Wisconsin? While they may not have an SM, you might ask if they have some type of service bulletins that would have been sent to the dealers. They may also have Corporate Design Decisions that apply to the later 10/20s.

Don"t give up on it.

Good luck,

Art

What you have is the best there is. Anything that pertains to the 15-30 is going to work for the 22-36 (it's the same engine with a larger bore) The old mechanics just tightened the bolts down evenly and adjusted the rockers by feel. If you want some specs I'd guess around 100 lbs would catch the head bolts and adjust the tappets something like .022. Tappets are always better too loose than too tight. If you have specific questions just ask away. There are several guys that frequent this forum that have been in lots of the early engines and know their way around. Hope this helps.

Thanks, everyone.
I am satisfied that there is nothing else out there. I have come to the conclusion that we have all searched pretty high low! And, Art, thanks for your input. I have poked around on the U of W site for IHC but I'll look a little more. Tom

Tom,
I have never heard anyone but an aviator use the term, "No Joy".
If so, blues skies, and may the wind at your back never be your own.

Dell,
You are very astute! Yes, indeed I am a pilot (private), with my last flight being in 1995. I have about 1000 hours, about half in Cessna 150-152 and the other half in V-Tail Beechcraft Bonanza. Those were the fun days...but too much cost for a largely "frivolous" hobby!
Tom

Usually the early tractors came with their own tool kit so things like adjusting the tappets were covered by using the tool provided. If all tractors came with the correct tools there was no need to publish any specifications.
