Late Tractors with Belt Pulleys and Hand Cranks

Sometimes my curiosity gets to me. . . and I have to ask questions in this tractor forum.

While looking at my old 1951 M the other day; (cant wait till spring so I can run her a bit) I was noticing the belt pulley and hand crank (and both still work just fine !).

MY QUESTIONS: What is the latest year and model of IH tractor anyone has actually seen that is equipped with a belt pulley and what is the latest year and model of IH tractor anyone has actually seen that is equipped with a usable hand crank shaft out the front of the tractor?

I notice on tractors such as a 656 there is a bolted on plate where the pulley wheel could go. Perhaps these were still a manufacturer's option on some of these later tractors. Also, It seems I have noticed a hole in the front bolster of some later tractors where perhaps a hand crank shaft could protrude.

Thanks, Ross.

Do think you could crank it if you had to? Seems like when you get to a 50+ horse motor that a person couldn't turn it by hand if they wanted to.

It's not as bad as you would think. TD20s (691 cubes, 6:1, gas start) could be hand cranked and had with provisions for both up into the 60s. It's a given that the crank handle is kinda long. The crank spigot was usually blocked by a pump, but the pulley access point remained for a long time, as a PTO could also be installed.

i have a 1961 660 diesel with a crank, and it sure is handy for turning the engine over to set pump timing. if you figure it can be started with the crank, forget it. on the other hand i start my 1951 wd9 often with a crank.

I can't wait for spring to get my 450 Diesel out and see if I can get it started with a hand crank. I just bought the tractor 2 months ago and have not had a chance to try hand starting it yet. I do believe it will be hard to start being right around 50HP

This belt pulley is on a 660. This gearbox and similar were used for many years after that period. Probably up till the Magnum. They were built for both 540 and 1000 rpm. I am guessing the last side mounted pulley disappeared with the 686 but don't hold me to that.

wardner, we have a 656 with original manual and for a belt pulley option they show the pto gearbox style only. tractor was one of the last off the line however. I would guess somewhere at the 06 series being the end of under fuel tank mounted belt pulley.

Hi Ross nearly all of the IH letter tractors that came into the UK up till the end of 1949 were hand crank tractors. I have a 1940 BN a 1945 H and a 1949 M and they are all hand crank. If the tractor is timed right it should not kick you when starting. MJ

My 56 series manuals show a rear-mounted belt pulley option.

Since the PTO went largely unchanged up through the 3688, technically belt pulley was an "option" right up to 1985. Somehow I doubt that IH was making the gearboxes much past 1970, though.

I have cranked my gasser M on days when it didn't have enough battery to crank. This motor is by no means "fresh" nor is it tired. I used a hand crank from my wd45 witch cranks easy so dunno if the IH cranks are better suited but it was about all I wanted to crank. There is a lot of rotating mass and a lot of cubes in that motor for a hand crank.

Ross, sounds like you need a challange of restoring a F series tractor,Hand cranking makes you a better mechanic,my first was a F12,it can sit during the winter and a few cranks it will start and idel like its warm, then every now and then in front of a croud it will throw a fit, which makes you look like a fool
