farmalll 400 serial number

I have three 400 2 gas and 1 diesel. 1 of the gas tractors has a D behind the engine serial number and the other gas and diesel has nothing after the serial number.

The gas and 1 diesel are correct. The stamper misplaced his D stamper on the other diesel.

Post could be understood 2 different ways, tag or engine numbers. Poster stated the D was after the engine serial #. That would be a non diesel engine originaly equiped with higher compression pistons to compensate for altitudes around 5000 ft. above sea level. D on diesel engines is before the engine size D264 then engine serial # following. On the serial tag the diesel D was stamped on a different line than the serial #.
If a gas tractor has a D on the tag, its following the serial # on the same line and could be bordered with other letters.

Thank you very much for your help. I am sorry that I was unclear on my Question. The stamped number on the block is 139193D just to the right of the 264 displacement code. The tractor vin is 3415 DS. MY other gas and diesel do not have the D stamped behind the engine vin. If I understand you correctly it is because it is high compression model for above 5000 ft. This could explain why the exhaust is so much louder than the other 400 and super m. Thank you very much for all of your help.

Sorry, I misread the post. Sometimes I think I have dyslexia, provided I spelled it right.

Yes the tractor was originaly sold with different pistons than a regular 400 tractor. The pistons gave a higher compression ratio to compensate for power loss in the thinner air. IH refered to the ones marked by a D on a 400 as 5000 ft. They were sold below and above that elevation though. Most tractors received several overhauls by now, so its hard to say what pistons and sleeves are in it now. Most 400 found now have 4.125 C281 pistons and sleeves installed. Tractor and engine you have were put togeather at the factory in December of 1954. Tractor probably has the same type rear wheels unless changed as the SM.

Thank you very much, your info is very helpfull. It did have the same wheels as an SM but I changed them when I got new wheels and tires for it. I was just making sure that it wasnt a demonstrator model---Darn! Thank you very much.
