H pto oil leak

I posted about my brakes leaking oil, Well, if I can replace the seals in the nbrakes, what is there to fixing the leak in the pto?

Its been along time since I fixed the oil leak my H pto but I think it was simply removing the 2 bolts that hold the cap around the shaft and pulling it off. I don't recall if I had to lower the level of the transmission oil. You'll need a seal and a gasket to put it back. I can't remember if there is another gasket on the unit that could leak but you can easily tell by looking at it.

There's also a gasket where the whole PTO unit joins the rear end case, but I would think it would be less likely to leak since it is between two static parts rather than between a moving part and a static one. I would think if you parked the tractor pointing a little downhill it would keep the oil out of the way nicely.

I just put mine back together this evening, had the same problem. It's very easy. The seal is in a bearing retainr/cover held in place by two bolts. Just remove the two bolts and the retainer will slide right off the pto shaft. When I did mine, I did lose some oil, so be prepared for that. Once you remove the cover, the seal cann be driven out easily with a seal driver or even an appropriate size socket and hammer. I got the new seal from Carquest, cost me 9 bucks. Just give 'em the part number from the old seal, they should be able to cross it just fine. The whole job took 30 minutes tops. Gary

Follow Gary's procedure, but there are a couple of things you might want to keep in mind. The seal housing is also the bearing retainer. Don't pull on the PTO shaft (as I did). You will spend more time re-stabbing the shaft and collar than doing the entire seal replacement. Also, make sure there are no burrs on the splines of the shaft when installing the new seal. It can nick the lip and not solve your leak problem. I have wrapped rough shafts with part of a sheet of notebook paper and rotated the seal - in the same direction of the wrap - to prevent lip damage. This is a 'must' if you plan to run the thinner hy-tran fluid and want zero leakage.

Also a seal where the operating lever shaft goes in the side of pto housing. If its leaking the pto unit would need removed to replace it.
