farmall md oil leak

i got that md running again just put new plugs in and got the throttle linkage fixed but i noticed its leaking oil on the front corner of the engine right above the generator where the block and head meet could this be a bad head gasket???the tractor did set for a period of time and ive only run the thing twice for approx 20 min since i bought it,its not pouring out just seeping. thanks jim

It is a common leak area. (mine did it).
If it were mine, I would use a razor saw (exacto) and recess the gasket a little at that spot to 1/16" deep. Then clean with brake clean and let dry. I would then use a dab of epoxy putty, or JB Weld to fill the recess. Let it stand for a day, then give it a try. It seems that a head gasket is the next solution. Jim

RUn the pants off of it pulling something heavy or in the field if possible. They really do not like idle conditions, they will wet stack and smoke unless used regularly. (Wet stacking is water and diesel soot mixture looking like black oil, sprinkling out of the exhaust until well warmed up. Field work or PTO loads keep them healthy. After they work they will behave for a few hours of partial load running. Jim

Thought I would chime in on this one. My Md leaked in exactly the same spot you describe. When I got the tractor, I ran it hard (as JaNicholson has said) and the leak almost stopped. I have since pulled the head and ground the valves, installed new guides, and put in a couple of new starting valves. Don't have the tractor back together yet, but hoping a new head gasket and proper sequential torquing will fix it.

I am not sure if there is an actual kit available.
I bought my gaskets separately, but was pleasantly surprised to find that they were all available, but not particularly cheap.

I just did that with my Super MD, the new head gasket is not like the old one. The new ones are made of paper type and the old ones were metal with a filler material. However the new gasket seems to work well for me, i sprayed it with a copper coat spray. Like Bruce said all most all the parts are out there but just alittle on the high side. A valve grid set is actually cheapest though CNH for around 160 this is the head gasket, valve cover gasket and manifold gaskets. Does not include carb mounting gasket.
