Farmall A rear inner final drive bearing

I recenetly discovered that the lower inner final drive bearing has gone bad on my A. Its the one located behand the 4 bolt inspection cover. I got the bolt out and everything out of the way but the bearing wont come out. The outside race of the bearing is free but the inside race is stuck to the shaft. Before I go crazy trying to remove it I thought Id ask if anyone had ideas. The nly one Ive gotten from the local parts store was that you have to push the shaft out which ruins the outer seal and I am trying to avoid that. Maybe a slider hammer? Maybe a little heat? Any ideas feel free to post. Thanks!

Removing the whole shaft will not ruin the outer seal since it sits in the outer bearing retainer (also 4 bolt job) and will move with the shaft. If you wish I can send you a scan of a cross sectional drawing of the final drive assy from my service manual tomorrow. While you have it apart you may wish to replace the outer bearing and the seal as well anyway.
Another idea (redneck idea, maybe) for removing the shot inner bearing without removing the whole shaft is this: demolish the cage in which the bearing balls sit with a screwdriver and remove bits and pieces with nose pliers. Remove all balls and outer bearing ring. Now you have created enough room to pull the inner ring with a self centering/clamping puller.

Haha maybe you just called me a redneck but I did start doing exactly that. Removing the cage and bearings.... I havtn pulled it all the way out yet but Im glad to know I wont ruin that seal since it isnt really leaking at all. I guess id rather leave the wheel and everything on if I can. But destroying the cage is the route Im on so far. Thanks Ill post when I figure it all out.

Didn't want to call anyone a redneck...
BTW you better take wheel from axle or you will never be able to mount the new inner bearing or may even cause damage to other parts in the process. Hendrik
