My super c will run fine first 2 mins, then just stops, starts right up. It won't run as well or for 2 mins. next start. New condenser, points are good by-passed kill switch put on working coil. Whats next?

Check and see if there is enough gas at the carb. Take of the fuel line at the carb. and make sure there is fuel there. There is a filter in the little elebow at the carb check to make sure there is no dirt in there. If you dont get enough fuel at the carb. you can take compresed air and blow back into the tank some time there is dirt stuck in the tube on top of the sedement bowl.

I have cleaned bowl and tank gas runs fine out of gas line, installed new carb, but I will check the filter.
Thanks for yor reply

Connect a spark tester to one of the spark plug wires and verify that the spark remains constant even while the engine is "dying".

If the spark remains constant you'll know FOR SURE it's a gas problem and you can direct your attention to gas flow/carburetor issues.

OBVIOUSLY, if the spark fails as the engine quits and begins to coast to a stop you'll need to look at the ignition system.

Filter? There is not supposed to be a filter.

A lot of people will put an inline fuel filter on these old tractors thinking they're doing a stroke. The problem is, most inline filters are meant for pressurized systems where a pump is sucking or pushing the fuel through the filter.

IH tractors are gravity feed systems, and those types of filters are too restrictive.

Get rid of any inline filter, and use a solid tube to get the gas from the tank to the carb.

If you have the correct filter in your gas line, it will work fine. I have filters on 4 or 5 of my old IH tractors and none of them have ever caused a problem. If you want, I can find the NAPA number of the filter I use. One of the tractors is my 1975 IH 140 that came from the factory with a filter and no sediment bowl.

The filter is in the elbow and came in the carb, fuel has no problem getting to the carb and filter is clean. Checked the spark plugsfor cracks appears to be ok
Thanks for your replys

I have seen a clean great new filter plug up and not flow with what looked like no reason. Nothing visible in or on the paper pleats. The paper pores become plugged and without fuel pump pressure, the gravity is not able to make it flow. One day I (in my near sleep) put sugar in the coffe basket of the coffe maker. My instant solution was to put the coffe in on top of it sense I would put sugar in it as well eventually.
Wrong! The sugar plugged the filter immediatly and would not allow coffe to flow. The basket over flowed making a dramatic mess.
I am sure there is not sugar in the tank, but filter s can be the problem. Put a piece of rubber hose where it is, and see if it runs! Jim

Check the oil bath cleaner and make sure it is not plugged up. I had a cub act like what you are describing and it was going too rich because the filter was plugged up above the oil bath bowl. I took the whole assemby off the tractor and cleaned it out. The previous owner had failed to keep oil in the bowl. He rebuilt the engine and it didn't run right and then sold it. You can make a quick check by sliding off the air intake hose between the oil bath cleaner and the carb. Obviously don't run it long without clean air to the carb. I am guessing your C is similiar. I have an H with an oil bath cleaner. Also be sure the coil is the correct one. The coil must have an internal resistor if you are running on 12 volts or it must be the type that has the correct external resistor to reduce the current flow through a 6 Volt coil. It took me two improper set-ups before I learned this and bought the correct coil from NAPA.

HMMM...this sounds a lot like my IH 404 tractor. It ran fine until I ended up replacing the sediment bowl, and has never been the same since. It makes sense that with only a gravity fed system an in-line filter would restrict the flow of gas. I've noticed that when my tractor sits parked, the cheapie plastic disposable filter is only 1/4 full of gas. My tractor runs for 3 or 4 minutes then dies. If I wait a couple of minutes and start it again it'll run for a couple of minutes then die. I've been through the carb 3 times, replaced everything in the ignition system, replaced the fuel line with rubber (used to be metal), cleaned and coated the fuel tank, and I'm losing my mind. Is it OK, assuming I'm using clean/fresh 89-91 octane non-ethanol fuel with sta-bil added to run without a filter? I'm just a bit scared of screwing up my tractor,it's my first one, and we rely on it heavily to move round bales to our cows etc.
