Hi, I have a farmall M that I am having trouble with. I put new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. (getting good spark) Cleaned the carburetor and I had to replace the manifold(the old one was completely shot.) But still I cant get it to run. When I pull start it it will puff smoke then backfire hard with a nice flame show out the exhaust. What could be wrong. thanks in advance for any help

I had an Allis C that did the flames out the exhaust thing, and turned out it was way out of time. I don't know how it got to be that far out, but I bought it not running, and I guess that was why.

hi just pull your distributer back off and turn it if you pull the housing off it will only go on 2 ways in or out flip it and try that

The timing is off.

Remove the front spark plug. Have someone slowly turn the engine over with the hand crank while you hold your finger in the spark plug hole.

When you feel air whooshing out, stop. Go to the front pulley and slowly turn the engine until the pointer on the front of the engine lines up with the notch in the pulley.

Follow the front spark plug wire back to the distributor cap. Mark that post on the cap. Remove the cap. If the tang on the rotor is not directly below that post, that's where your problem is.

You've got to figure out why it's that way, and what to do to fix it.

If it's a little off you just need to rotate the distributor a little to line it up.

If it's WAY off, you probably put the wires on the wrong posts.

Thank you all for your insight. when the weather clears up I will go outside and work on the timing. I will reply back if I cant get it that way. thanks
