umbrella valve seals?

Hello fella's. Has anyone ever tried umbrella valve seals on their M's? I know it's kinda a patch job and just wanted to know if they work? If so i might be intrested in some. What's the size of the valves on a 248? I don't have the fancy tools to measure ID and OD, if i need that?...just curious. Thanks fellas-Ted

a good machine shop can supply any workable seal

Put them on. Can be done W/O removing head. Remove the rockers. Put a piece of cotton rope in the Spark plug hole, turn the engine to keep the valves closed with the rope as a filler in the combustion chamber (leave some sticking out!!) Compress the retainer and remove the keepers. Remove the spring and place umbrella on the stem. Put it all back. Jim

Felpro makes some that work. I don't remember the number on the bag, maybe 591??? I picked them up at a local machine shop.

Dad was a IH dealer mechanic for over 20 years and swares by the umbrella valve seals . He said to use them when you can.
