I got the steering box tore down . Parts cleaned up , dropped steering box shaft off at machine shop to remove old race and press new bearing on , I have noticed some pitting on shaft where oil seal runs .
Question would you have the machine shop turn the shaft and remove the pitting and put in a different size oil seal ? Slight pitting ?
Some have said they filled gear box with grease , others said they had filled gear box with STP , manual recommends a 135 weight oil .
What are your thoughts ?
Someone had tried to fill gear box with grease , it filled uppers bearing and nothing else stopped up flow holes to rest of gear box . When I took it apart it was full of water , LOL
Your thoughts please
Thank you

Just a thin sleeve that fits over the shaft. Places that sell bearings and seals have them. In the absence of a store that specializes, try NAPA.

Corn head grease has been used in steering gearboxes since it has less of a tendency to ooz out but still will flow. It can be pumped in with a grease gun. I used it in a JD A mixed 50-50 with 140 weight gear lube also and haven't had a drop leak out anywhere and that box uses a cork seal. I am planning on doing the same with the IH B i am working on now.

I went to machine shop this morning and talked to the guys there , what I decided to do was add a grease fitting and fill it with grease , I will pack bearings with as much grease as possible ---
While I am waiting on machine shop. I decided to change out the fluids - transmission had a mix of oil and water - white ------very stiff-----hydrolic fluid was not bad but screen was stopped up , that may have been the cause of whine from hydrolics ---I cleaned screen and it has a small hole , I am going to try and sorder that screen closed. My god the gunk ----
I flushed transmission with 2 gallons of diesel fuel --

If you go the grease route (I did about 5 yrs. ago on my 140 and so far so good), remember to pull a plug every time you pump on the zerk. If not, your nice new seal will pop out very quickly.

Use corn head grease. It is "wetter" and will settle in between the gear teeth better, thus do a better job of keeping the teeth lubed. You can get it at a JD dealership. mike
