.060 bearings

I don't think any company made .060 undersized bearings for the 400. The crankshaft bearing journals are surface hardened and if you ground them .060 undersized you would very likely grind through the hardened surface exposing softer steel which would wear pretty fast.

(quoted from post at 21:50:52 02/22/10) Hey Guys,
I am looking for some .060 under main bearing for my 400 farmall?
any one know were I could get some?
Thanks Stew in AZ

Should be the same size as a set of .010 under for an early M.

Late M, 400, and 450 had a crankshaft with .050 larger journals than the original M. The bore in the block is same for all blocks.

A standard M crankshaft, unless out of M serial # 291050 or higher is 60 thousands smaller than a 400 one on the mains. So standard small journal M crankshaft main bearings could work. Have the crank turned to M standard size for engines lower than engine serial # 278049 if you are set on doing that. I wouldn't recomend it. By the time 400 cranks came along they were treating the journal surfaces deeper to make sure .030 off didn't get below the treatment, but no way they would make .060.

Owen I think you know your stuff and respect that, but I think you made a mistake. One of us did anyway but pretty sure its .060 different on the mains and .050 on the rod journals.

Hey Guys,
I bought the tractor not running, took the pan off to find that some one overhauled the motor and the main middle cap was off, so I thought I would put in new mains only to find out after I had it miked that the mains were .060 under. The tractor has only 2900 hours on a working tach, also had the head checked was cracked had it fixed. So you think that bearing from a M will work? Or
should I get a new crank? Thanks Stew

You are correct sir. It just goes to show that not everything that I know is true!

May have a M crank in it, wouldn't be the first one stuck in a C264 or 281 block. Can you read the numbers on the back of mains?
If its a standard size small journal crank from a M tractor find a casting # on the side of a crank throw. If it ends in DC or a letter lower than C, it came as a small journal crank. DD or DE etc is a big journal. Some cranks IH sold as .030 under may have another # or letter. As Owen said big and small journal cranks will fit 248 through 281 blocks, if the matching bearings are used.
