What are the opinions of a gas ih 544 hydro? Was this a good tractor? Was it underpowered because of the hydro? Could you use it on a 3-16 semimount plow or would that be to much for the hydro? Paul

544s are a good tractor. It will plow, but Hydros are not ment for that kind of work. They are more for perscion work in vegies or vineyard doing PTO spraying where calibration is needed or clutivating where slow perscion driving is needed. It will plow and the trans will roar over the engine noise. If you are plowing gumbo it will even run HOT!

I agree my brother has one and it is a very handy tractor (tried to trade my 756 to him for it but no dice) If you dont have a lot of ground to plow step down to 2 16s and a smaller disc. Its cheaper than a new tractor. These hydro's seem to be great if you don't work them to hard and keep them running cool.

I'd look for a gear drive if plowing is your game.

You gotta consider that these tractors are pushing 45 years old now. Not quite, but close. Even if the hydro works now that's no guarantee it will hold up under heavy use. The cost to fix a hydro will usually exceed the value of the tractor unless you can do it yourself. You almost have to be a Greek god to be able to fix a hydro in your home shop.

Frankly I'd think hydros would be absolute dogs on the market, but they still seem to bring a premium price.
