Super C flywheel ring gear

took my ring gear off my flywheel for the super c project and about 6" of the edge broke off with the gear. Was wondering if this was a common problem and if I can put the new ring gear on with no problems. IT appears it can still work. Any thoughts? Is this flywheel a boat anchor now?

You can get a new ring gear from Case/IH. I put a new on on my Super C a couple of years ago. We heated the new one with a MAPP gas torch. It slipped right on and once it cooled it was there to stay. Used the same process to remove the old one. Since you have the tractor split I would definitely put a new ring gear on. Not sure how much if it you chipped out but for no more than they cost why not do it right. The first one lasted over 50 years so this one will surely out live you.

I think Randy missed the point! If part of the flywheel is missing I would think you need to find another one, it would be badly out of balance and the ring gear should be supported all the way around. There must of been a flaw in the casting to cause this to happen, never heard of it!

A picture would help a whole lot. Otherwise, we are just guessing. If it is just 6" of the tiny flange, no big deal. The amount of weight lost is essentially nothing. I've seen ones like that reused, no problem.

I did miss that. I assumed that he broke a piece of the ring gear. If he broke a piece of the flywheel then he has bigger problems to worry about, like why the flywheel broke in the first place. That would definitely cause balance problems.

I had the same thing happen, 1/4 of the flange, maybe. Once I had the new ring gear on, I ground off the balance of the flange, just so I wouldn"t have to worry about the balance of the flywheel, (which would have probably been negligible). It"s given me no trouble whatsoever, without the flange.
