OK so I posted the other day about a squeaking rear end. Well I pulled the clutch side brakes off to find them loaded full of rust and dirt..not much salvageable in there. I know there is oil in the axle housing just below the fill/check plug. Then I pulled the brake pedal side brake housing off only to have oil come running out. Now my question is, would that axle carrier have been off previously and had holes been put in between there and the rear housing to make that one big cavity. Just curious why one side & not the other.

Well here i am not real sure what your telling me , but even if the axle housing has been off and one side drilled to take oil from the main housing the level would not be that high to have oil Gushing out . So either for some really odd reason it is that over full and here i would pull the check plug to see or it is slinging oil out past the bull pinion seal that bad or the brake piston is leaking that bad . Now if the bull pinion seal is out check for a bad bearing or two on it . Now as for the brakes yea i have seen some really nasty ones on some of the 706's that i have bought . And when redoing them do it all and be done with it , make sure that the adjusters are free and set when you put it back together Install NEW return spring and what ever flavor brake lining you so chose . And install new seals and O/Rings in the brake piston and with a medium grit emery cloth clean all the surfaces where they ride on . .

hey tractor vet, I should of stated that the oil came out of the lowest hole on the brake housing when I pulled it out... Looking at the hyd fluid dipstick, it appeared that the oil was just above that lowest hole that the oil came out of, which would make sense.

It is a normal procedure to drill holes in the main frame to allow the oil in the axle housing to mix with the oil in the rear frame. If I understand you correctly, you removed the brake housing, not the axle housing, and oil came out. That is not an unusual event either but it means that the housing has not been drilled. The normal oil level in the rear frame is half covering the PTO drive shaft, well below the brake housings.

Originally the 06 series has separate oil reservoirs for the axle housings and the rear frame. If they have not been updated with the holes it is possible for the inner brake pinion seal to leak oil into the axle housing. When that happens the axle housing will fill to the level of the brake pinion. I believe that is what you are describing.

The preferred repair is to remove the axle housing. Drill two holes in the lower portion of the rear frame. Remove the plug by the inner axle bearing. Remove the inner brake pinion seal. Cut the head off of the level check plug to indicate that that side of the housing has been updated.

As long as oil is not entering the brake assembly or leaking out the axle, the simple work around is to occasionally drain some oil out of the level check plug. There is a vent between the axle reservoir and the rear frame so even if the housing were to become completely filled with oil it would not build pressure in the axle housing.

A 706 has dry brakes. If you took off the brake cover, if I'm thinking is what you took off you shouldn't have fluid coming out. There are seals that go into the hydraulic fluid system. They may need replaced on that side. It uses the brake plate as a piston for the brakes.
