Silage Tractor

I am wondering what a good silage tractor would be in the 06/56/66/86 series. I'm looking to run a NH790 and cut about 100-150 acres. The majority of it would be haylage but perhaps about 40 acres would be corn silage. I haven't decided whether the wagon will be pulled behind the chopper or by another tractor yet. Just looking for some ideas. Do I really need 150HP or is something in the 100-110HP range sufficient? The land here is flat. Thanks.

We used a 1466 for years running a Fox chopper that had both a head for hay and a 2 row corn head. We pulled Badger wagons behind the chopper. The 14 handled it very well...on all sorts of terrain from flat to hilly.

My Buddy and i run a 1066 that i sold him ten years ago on a New Holland 782 that we saved from the scrap man and totally rebuilt we pull 18 foot H$S rear unload wagons over here in the humps and bumps of N./E . Ohio the 1066 is tweaked a good bit and we can run low third with the stick ahead most of the time in really good corn as long as the knifes and shear bar are set . The 10 Knows it is back there . So the more pony power ya have up ft. and weight the better off you are if you want to make time as for running it with a 100 Hp. it will do it but you will be running in the low side of second . As we had to put the 806 on the chopper one day and my 806 is tweaked to about 115 Hp. and it was lots of smoke and second low with the stick back. So nothing less then a 1066 or 1086 and make sure that what ever tractor your using is well weighted as them wagons get heavy fast and will shove you around .

depends on the land i guess. where i work we chop everything with a JD 4020 and a jd 3950 chopper and 16 ft boxes. that is with some pretty good hills. pulls it just fine and runs it fine at the same time. chopping corn is a little slow but we can move right along with haylage. for your situation i would almost say that like an 856 would be sufficient. im no expert by far but im just stating from experience.

I cut corn with an 886 dynoed out at 100 hp and my harvester is a NH 790 and i pull 16 foot dion forage wagons behind the harvester. i normally run 3rd gear low range and low range on the TA. Alittle more power would be nice but the old girl does just fine.
