I have a 49 M,I noticed the wiring was the old cloth type " so " I decided to replace it. 14 and 12 where appliccable. It"s a 12 volt con. Was running before I made the change but now ?

Won"t start, new coil/resistor, new wires, still no start. I"m thinking that what I need is a diagram of the electrical wiring box. I"ve looked at your [bobs ] wiring diagrams and can't find what I need for my M. And by the way, I did replace the wire one at a time. Must have blinked ? Thanks for your forum.

Go back to the basics. Do you have spark from the coil wire??? If yes do you have spark at the plug wires?? If all you did was rewire it sounds like you didn't hook up something because it does not run. Also since you did not say does it at least turn over as in you hit the starter switch and the engine spins over??

Sorry about the lack of info, yes it does turn over, no spark at the coil and nothing at the spark plugs.

I thought that I was being careful not to mess up, but somehow I managed to do it.

I've been out there for a week trying to figure it out. Thanks for your help.

Well try doing this and see if it starts up. Run a hot wire from the battery to the coil, ignition side that is. If it fires up then you have a missing wire or connection from the ignition switch to the coil or from the ignition switch to the battery

The little gromet in the side of the distributor that connects the points to the coil can be incorrectly assembled allowing the points to short to ground. Tale the wire off of the terminal on the outside, and put an ohm meter on it. Open and close the points. if the ohm meter reads Infinity, then Zero as the points close, it is OK. If it stays at Zero, it is shorted. Jim

Ill bet you have the wire for the on/off switch on the wrong side of the starter switch, assuming thats where it was wired before?? Like old said, run a wire sraight to the battery from the coiland see if itll start.
