Steering Gearbox Cover Bolts Rub Grille on 47 M

The heads of the 2 front bolts on the steering gearbox cover have rubbed small holes in the front sheet metal grille on my 47 M. The two front bolts have a thin external tooth lock washer instead of regular thicker helical washer used on the other 3 cover bolts....I assume to help reduce the height of the bolts for more "clearance" to the grille. I have seen the same holes on another M grille also. How common is this? Is it possible to raise the radiator on its mounts or tip the radiator with the rod over the engine to eliminate the interference? If so, will this have any significant effect on getting the rest of the sheet metal to line up? Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

there are up and down and forward and back adjustments on the radiator. adding shims under the radiator raise it, and the strut rod will give fore-and back tilt. the limiting factor is the hole in the radiator where the steering shaft goes thru. adjust it high enough for clearance without any rubbing. use clay or even play dough on the top of the bolster to check clearance from the bolts to the sheet metal. also, be sure and check the clearance between the radiator shroud and the engine cooling fan.

Loosen the bolts holding down the radiator, loosen the hose connections (after draining the radiator), and use the rear support rod to push the radiator forward enough to clear the steering gear box.
Then retighten the bolts, hoses and refill the radiator.
This will also move the hood forward so it is not wearing into the breather pipe.

F-Dean, by beather pipe do you mean the air cleaner inlet pipe?

The hood of my tractor also has worn a hole in the front side of the inlet pipe. I have been thinking I need to move the air cleaner assembly somehow to center it better through the hole in the hood. If I understand you correctly, the holes in the grille by the steering gear and the air cleaner inlet contact with the hood may be related? I never thought of that possibility....Thanks.

Yes, they are related.

By moving the top of the radiator forward, you will (1) stop the grill wear and (2) move the hood forward. This will move the hole in the hood for the air cleaner forward also which should stop the wear into the air cleaner inlet pipe.

Before you lock the radiator in its new position, I suggest that you put the hood on and check the clearance around the air cleaner inlet pipe.
