Dead M, I killed it,,,,

Was plowing snow with my M the other day and backed it off the side of the road, had the nose up in the air, but not really high. Well the engine was making a lil noise so I shut it down. Went to restart it once I had help to pull it out of the ditch and the engine is stuck. Took 7 hours of tugging and cussing with several different vehicles before the dead M was out of the ditch. Cant turn the engine by hand or with the starter, removed the starter and cant budge it with a bar. Must have spun a bearing, hopefully since it wasnt running I didnt chew up the crank too bad, Do you think main bearing or rod bearing? Gonna drop the oil pan in a few days and take a peek...Jim

Pull the oil pan and remove the rod caps first to see if was a rod. Probably will need to split the tractor if the crankshaft is scored. Was it run low on oil? Hal

I am thinking it was at enough of a angle to cause the oil pump to not pickup. I am gonna check the rods, then go from there, from the prices for parts I see on ebay I could make a killing parting it out LOL.

easy way to find the culprit brg is try to wiggle the rods back & forth & sideways, a siezed one won't move at all, a worn out one will be way looser than the rest

Do you have the clutch blocked ahead/ released when you are trying to turn the engine? Before pulling the pan, I'd block the clutch ahead & remove the starter & try to move the flywheel with a large screwdriver using not much force.
Alternatively, jack up a rear wheel & try rocking the wheel with the tractor in high gear.

If you have a seized bearing most likely it is a rod bearing. They get oil after the mains and also it is a matter of physics. The rod bearing is a lot farther from the center line of the crankshaft so it takes less friction at that pont to stop the crankshaft with the additional leverage of a rod bearing compared to a main bearing.
