excessive gas usage

Don't know if this posted earlier, will try again. After replying to post by nodonutz about the resistor on my Super M, I have a question. While restoring the old girl, I removed dist cap for painting. Marked the wires on the cap to be sure to get them back on correct plugs, etc. When we put the cap back on, she wouldn't start. Talked to a local mechanic who has dealt with Farmalls for years and he said sounded to him like it was out of time. Checked tdc on #1 plug, all was right. Come to find out, it was timed 180d out! Didnt want to pull dist, so he came and we figured out wiring scheme. The old girl runs fine, but was wondering if timed 180 out, would it cause excessive gas usage?

If you moved the plug wires around, it's not out 180 degrees any more. Timing is always a relative term.

Those tractors were pretty thirsty in their day as the main power source on a farm, and I doubt they have gotten any better over 50+ years.

Won't change fuel consumtion a bit!

All your mechanic did change which tower on the distributor is designated "#1". Once that's set the engine will never know the difference.

What is excessive to you? I wish my memory was better because somewhere I have this written down exactly but my SMTA uses 2-3 gallons per hour is what I remember. The higher number when under load...baling, mowing, etc. Fuel economy WAS an issue back then surprisingly as it comes up in the sales literature from time to time. Still, I think that rate of consumption was considered pretty good. Still less than $10 an hour for one of the most honest workers you'll ever hire!

Tim - That's about my experience with the Super M.

Working hard (plowing/fitting) it will use a bit over 3 gals/hr. OTOH just potting around pulling the hayrides at the Christmas tree farm the SM runs all day (8 hours) on about 8 gallons.

For comparison in the same amount of time on the hayrides my Minne-Mo U and a pair of JD A's will use around 10 gals each; the JD 3020 gas will burn almost 14 gals.

thanks for the info, everyone. Yeah, she uses 3 to 3.5 gallons per hour when working her. Used to have a Super C that I traded even for the Super M. In my head, guess I was trying to compare the two, which I shouldn't have done. LOL.
