is the pulley a "press fit only" or is there a bolt installed in crankshaft end after installing the pulley? the shop manual isnt clear on wheather to remove a retaining bolt prior to using a puller to remove the crankshaft pulley. thanks, d. coleman

The crankshaft pulley is a press fit. There is not a retaining bolt. There is a threaded hole in the end of the crankshaft. On my cub, I used that to press the pully back on. When you remove the pulley, you must use a puller that bears against the hub of the pulley. If you pull against the flange, you will break it. Search the archives here. There is a lot about this subject, some show photos of puller designs for this job. Most show using a hydraulic jack, but I used threaded rods on mine and it worked fine.

thank you Haas for quick responce. i just pulled the engine for o/h. will finishing disassembly after my two week work hitch in south La., then to a machine shop for inspection of block and a valve job.

Here's a puller that John had made or he made for pulling those damper pulleys off a Cub. Hal

Except, some bottle jacks, including mine do not work in a horizontal position. A bearing separator and puller work for me.

Quite a few will only work horizontally if the pump is oriented to the bottom side. So the pump intake is at the bottom of the reservoir.

Could be -- last time I tried it
(not the pulley), the lever had to point up because there was no room underneath. I will try that next time.
