Installing a Clutch

In searching the archives on this site I came across a great tip from The Tractor Vet on how to install a clutch
"the spring damper goes to the pressure plate side , the vary best way to put it together is hang the pressureplate and disc on the input shaft and slide it together but first lock the fingers down , this can be done buy layen your pressure plate down on the floor and using your heel push down on one lever at a time and install a 1/4 inch nut between the lever and plate . NOW most times this is done from the rebuilder and if it already done make sure that you get them out after ya start to bolt the plate to the flywheel then ya just slide the tractor together and install the bolts from underthe tractor thru the hole in the bottom this way ya only have to align the pilotbearing."
I was planning on using his idea to put the clutch back in on my Farmall 340. Anyone else use this method?
Thank you Tractor Vet!

I've done that using little hardwood blocks (some rebuilt clutch "covers" come that way).

If one happens to disappear into the pressure plate when you tighten the plate down it will potentially do a LOT less damage than a 1/4" steel nut bouncing around in the flywheel housing!

i did that on my last m, strip back some copper wire and tie about a foot piece or so to each nut, then when you depress the clutch pedal you can pull the nuts out on the wires and not have to chase em.

The idea of working on tractors is to make the job esier and the way i do it also reduces the risk of messing up a clutch disc when tryen to slide , you noticed i said SLIDE the two pieces back together and not force it with bolts . and since i am sorta lazy i can lay down and reach up in and bolt it together .and by having everythink bolted back together all the blocking spliting stands and jack stands are out of the road the floor is cleaned up and all that is left is bolting down the pressure plate and adjusting the clutch and T/A linkage .and out the door .
