42 h trans ??

1942 farmall h won't shift into position to allow 4 & 5 gears to be used IS there a (lock) 5th GEAR WHEN STEEL WHEELS FACTORY INSTALLED tractor is on rubber at this time thanks any information

There is a lock-out bolt ahead and slightly to the left of the shift tower. Replace it with a 1" bolt. The long bolt keeps the 4th/5th shift fork rail from moving forward.

That bolt only prevented 5th gear from being used.
If both 4th & 5th gear are not functioning, you have a shift rail problem; I suggest lifting the transmission cover off & looking.
