farmall m ????

just bought a farmall m .serial #120988 x6 it has a box on left side by the brake. that says m-w made in auburn ind.how does this work? .what does the x6 stand for?. thanks

the 'box' on the side of the brake is an M&W after market hand clutch. This made it possible to have live PTO. When you pulled the lever back it would stop the motion of the tractor but not the PTO, thus a 'live' pto. There would have been a long handle that would have come out of the clutch, but from the sounds of it your missing this piece.

The X6 = low speed gears, meaning that it has a low first gear. 1.75 mph compared to the normal 2 5/8mph.
