1943 Farmall M Brake drum shaft seal housing removal

I am doing a full restoration on this tractor and right now I am working on the brakes. I dave the drum off and want to take the shaft seal housing off. I have backed the housing out about 3/4 of an inch and then it starts coming out hard. I was wondering if there is anything else that will come out with that housing other than the seal.

Stop how you are doing it, because it will break the bull pinion carrier. In order to remove the carrier, you need to remove the bull gear from the axle, otherwise the carrier will catch on the bull gear and break off part of the back side that holds the inner bearing in the carrier. If you really want to continue, the easiest way is to jack up the axle housing, remove the PTO, and rear wheel. Remove the bolt inside the trans that holds the bull gear to the axle, remove the axle cap and pull the axle out. This will also give you a chance to inspect the axle bearings, and replace the axle felt and oil seal. After the axle is out, and the bull gear moved out of the way, then remove the brake and bull carrier from the tractor.

Yep, you will break it big time if you keep on.
Saw my dad and uncle break it that exact way in about 1966.

It is a bugger getting that bull gear back on by just reaching through the PTO opening. I did it several time when I was in my 20's and strong as could be. No longer.

I would have to take the top off it it were me doing it.

I'm 27 and had a heck of a time doing all the crap with the lid off! One of mine had just a hair of a bugger on the end that kept kicking my butt.

You aren't doing a "full restoration" if you don't replace all those seals in the rear end anyhow. I haven't seen a Farmall that had EVERY one of them functioning properly. I found a couple "extra" problems that I didn't know I had when I broke my bull pinion carrier. I tried replacing mine w/o taking the bull pinion carrier out and I couldn't get that double seal out. Take note, the new seal is super tiny compared to the old one so I put one the right way on the inside and one the opposite way on the outside to help keep dirt out of the inner seal.

I agree, I"m restoring a 42 M. Last week I did just what you advised. Removed axle & removed PTO, lifted Bull Gear out and then pulled out brake housing. Oh, I had removed transmission cover a couple weeks earlier...it is very heavy so have a engine hoist to do the lifting.
