TD-9 IHC with oil soaked steering clutch

I'm just about finished fixing most all the problems on a '56 TD-9 crawler loader. One thing remains -this 54 year old machine has a right hand steering clutch that's weak. Not the turning brake, that's OK. Noticeable when I put it under load, it will spin the left track but not the right. Drives & steers OK otherwise. Pulled the lower clutch cover and it looks like it has been leaking some oil out of the trans. I'd guess this is the problem. Short of pulling the Drott loader off and fixing the seal, is there a way to degrease /dry out the clutch facings? Maybe buy a couple gallons of brake clean and put in the housing after plugging the drain? Thanks,

Even if you do figure out how to get it clean now, oil will just continue to leak out of the bad seal and foul up the clutch again...

If anything like a TD18, the clutch can be removed as a unit (Top cover plate likely needs to be removed). once out (and with a big press capable of compressing the apply spring, it can be disassembled to see if it is oil soaked, or worn. In reality an oil soaked disk is easier to replace than get dry enough to reinstall. Jim

The 6,9,14,18 all use the same mechanics, albeit in different diameters and depths. A slipper can be a problem, and is not likely the oil that is the main problem. Stack height is more important, as is spring pressure, which fades over time.

Trying the solvent may help, but I have to say it isn't too likely. A side problem is that if the seal is wore out (likely) then it will leak solvent into the main gearbox. To top it off, the clutch itself can only be partly submerged before fluid will come out places you haven't thought of, like the brake linkage ports. The clutch packs themselves are very thick and without some agitating the solvent will never get deep inside the pack. When you get it apart the standard utterance is "oh, now I understand". To help penetration, driving it around with solvent is one approach. A better one is to open the clutch and pipe solvent horizontally into the exposed edge of the outer drum near the top. It will run out the bottom. Collect clean and recirculate. Warning, there is a lot of crud in these compartments.
