IH 364 Stops running

I have an I/H 364 Diesel. After it warms up (approx. 30 mins), when placed under a load it will loose its prime and cut off. I have tried all the mechanical fuel pump tricks and even installed an electrical pump. Mechanic says its most likely a bad injector pump. Rebuild and installation is just under $1000. What are your thoughts and is it worth it? Otherwise I have a large piece of metal. I do, however, really like the tractor.

Thanks,
Jeff

Kinda like owning a Time Share vacation site.

You pay for it up front, then pay the annual maintance fee. The value does not go up by paying the mainance fees but you can't use it if you don't pay the fees. When you sell your Time Share you do not recover the cost of the fees.

So if you pay for the pump rebuild consider that your maintance fee and you will be able to use your tractor again. The tractor will be worth the same as it was before the pump went bad but at least you will get to use it.

The tradeoff in power and efficiency on a diesel is complexity and cost to repair. If you can get the injector pump rebuilt and reinstalled for a mere $1000 you are getting off easy.

If you feel the tractor is worth less than $1000, then scrap it.

What are all these so called "mechanical pump tricks" that you tried?

Diesels are not something your average "shadetree mechanic" should mess with. You can easily do more harm than good.

And another thing. If you fix what you have you know what you have.

You could go out and spend $2000,$3000 or even $10,000 on another tractor and have the fuel pump, engine or about anything go bad on it as well.

Well before i start pulling the injection pump i would be pulling the plugs out of the fuel tank and first cleaning it out . First off If the pump was bad you would more then likely have a hard starting problem and you are saying that it is loosen prime that tells me that something is stopping the flow of fuel to the lift pump and slowing the fuel to the injection pump . Now maybe i am all wet here but that is where i would be looking first . You can not believe what all i have found in fuel tanks over the years.

Hi Jeff, I am with Tractor Vet, it is a fuel tank to lift pump problem. Using a clean bucket take the fuel line off at the inlet of the lift pump and let it drain into the bucket. Diesel fuel should run at the full of the fuel line, if it doesn't then there is junk in the tank or the fuel line. Could even be a clogged fuel tank breather, so try removing the fuel tank filler cap. My brother has had the carcus of a lady bug in his 684 fuel tank that caused similar problems. When I was a teen we had a B414 which I believe is the grandfather of the 364 and we had a small bit of rubber from the fuel tank filler hose get in the fuel line between the tractor's fuel tank and the lift pump that caused similar problems.

Good Luck

I"m with vet and jimb2 too!
got a used 685 that we had to remove the fuel tank lines and fittings and clean out within the first week. lots of crud, leaves, and bugs.

yeah, my grandpa fought a problem with a plugged fuel tank and lines on his 49 Studebaker pickup for a few days. Nothing harder for this 5 year old kid than to tell his grandpa that I found a toad hopping along and put it in the gas tank.
