IH t-a experts needed (mech. diode).... 706 IH

I have a 1967 706 that has a mechanical diode t-a with about 1000 hours on the t-a. Last fall it started "freewheeling" on the level when i would shift from direct to t-a. It would eventually grab after about 20 seconds or so. If I push on the clutch and stop it will t-a then also. It shifts fine to t-a if you are going uphill or under a load. I have checked the rod adjustment and it is perfect. Also the tell lite shows the pressure isn't low as it goes out right before you let up on the clutch and the steering and brakes work fine. I am hoping it is not the t-a but would like some expert opinions where to start on this project.

Yep it is the T/A alright . Myself i have never liked the diode t/a's and i know for a fact that the locql Case I h dealer stopped putting them in because of the problems . A good Hy Capacity standard old fashoined one installed correctly will out live the new fangled thing hands down .

Tractor Vet is right on. You mentioned that the ta shifts and pulls ok with a load against it and only free wheels on the level or going down hill. That would indicate that the diode is working properly but the ta lock up clutch pack is not working. It would be a good idea to do a Ta pressure test to see where the pressures are at. Could be a blown mcv gasket losing pressure to the low clutch pack.Irregardless those diode ta's are junk.

CaseIH just introduced that diode style TA when I left them . I think they had an extended warranty didn't they, like 5 years or something. I may well be wrong on that. I never had anything to do with them. I stayed with the heavy duty sprag one.

Do a search on posts by me. A while back I asked about freewheeling large-frame TAs, as the TAs in both my Dad's 1066 and 856 freewheel.

The CaseIH dealer that did the TA replacement said it was "normal" and wouldn't fix it. I think tractor vet or someone said one of the pressures was too low.
