IH 656 Diesel utility questions

I'm looking to purchase a 656 Diesel w/loader. I'm relatively new to these tractors and had a few questions if someone would be as kind to help.

1973 656 w/2000 IH loader

1. Did these tractors have the T/A option?

2. When equipped with the 2000 IH loader, what's the approximate lift capacity of the loader when mounted on this tractor?

3. I've read a few articles about a "low" utility and a "high" utility tractor. What's the difference, just tire size?

4. Did these tractors have a live PTO?

5. How many speeds for/rev?

6. Are they known for reliability?

7. What about the engine? Was there only one diesel engine that was used?

8. In your opinion, are parts fairly available?

9. I've read conflicting stories about fuel usage. Some say high fuel consumption. Any thoughts about this?

10. What is the price range for a 656 D Utility w/loader that is in good shape (everything works as it should)?

Thanks so much. We need something a bit bigger for our 30 acre farm and thought this might be a good match for random tasks (and lifting) around the farm. I already have a row crop and need a wide front because of hills.

Thanks in advance. I appreciate any help.

never had one, but I can answer a few of your questions:

1973 656 w/2000 IH loader

1. Did these tractors have the T/A option?
Yes
4. Did these tractors have a live PTO?
yes
5. How many speeds for/rev?
5/1 (with TA 10/2)
6. Are they known for reliability?
yes
7. What about the engine? Was there only one diesel engine that was used? yes, the D-282

a regular utility will have 28 or 30" back tires. the high utility will have 38" back tires and a bar axle like the farmalls. also longer front spindles.
because of the way the front axle on a 656 utility is hung, it will wear the bushings faster than a farmall front axle will. if it has had a loader on it for much of its life, check the slop in the axle suspension with a hydraulic jack. also check the steering arms tightness to the spindles.

Only problem I had with the utility was the fenders. They sit so high a shorter person hides between them. Otherwise, I loved that tractor. But I liked the row crop 656 diesel much better.

The "high utility" version is actually called "row crop" on the tag. Here's a picture of my 656D Hydro Row Crop.

i have 2 international high utilities. the one dad bought new says high utility 656. the other one says row crop 656. the badges were changed during the run of 656s.

Thanks for the tip and info! I"m going to look at it Saturday 2/20.

I'll let everyone know.
