Archives Use

Wardner, I am very suprised at your comment that "many people" consider the archives useless. Maybe to some that would rather post "live" and then wait for someone to answer.
But if you think about it, posting live is like fishing. Just because you throw in your line doesn't guarantee you will get a bite.
Anyone that has used the archives on this site knows that they are an encyclopedic volume of knowledge and experience available instantly to at anytime without having to wait for a "bite".

By the way, I would like to thank Jimminy Cricket from the original Mickey Mouse Club for teaching me how to spell encyclopedia.

(Wardner, On initial post I misspelled your name, it was not intentional, just an old brain on a Sunday)

Never mind, I found it...

Since you started a new thread on it, I'll weigh in. Searching the archives THRU this site is a painful process but a Google search will scan the archives outside of this site and bring up many useful hits.

I've used this archive Thru 3 tractor quests now and havn't found it that painful, to find this much knowledge on one site is actually pretty cool. Could it be improved? of course, but considering its Free I don't have anything to match it to. Spend a day at Wisconsin Historical and feel the Pain!

People have made the "useless" comment countless times. I am not one of those. I find the archives to be valuable component to this board.

Those that critisize the functionality of the archives just aren't willing to do their own research. There are lots of them here. I remember one post where someone titled his thread with "QUICK, I need Bates Implement's telephone number", or something similar. I lit into him. He could have used the archives or simply filled in a Google search box. That would have been a whole lot quicker.

Should I post a link to that thread after finding it in the archives? Nah, it's not worth the trouble but it could be done easily by using the words "quick", "telephone", and "Bates". If there are no hits, start deleting a keyword or two. (I sure hopes this works, LOL)

BTW, this is a prime example why spelling is important.

Here's what I've found using the archives here. For somebody that's been around a while and used them a lot, you'll find a simple search might turn up 1300 threads, including each response in a thread, starting with a re; If you understand that you can move around and find the top post in each thread, and see the whole thing. If a newbie tried a search like that and got 1 300 results, I can understand how he might be more than a little bewildered, say to heck with it and start a new thread.

I have found the archives tremendously useful in my 18 months of
using this site. They are usually my first place to look for anything
I need to know, and if I can't find it there or am still confused then
I'll start a new thread. Some of the folks on the boards have
passed on, but their knowledge is preserved in the archive too.

Personally, I've found the archives extremely helpful. I've gone almost all the way through an H and only had to post one thread, on the tractor. It could be that it is just easier to type a question and wait for an answer, or it could be that newer users don't fully understand how to use the archives initially.

One last comment, I promise...yes, the archives are particularly valuable for tapping the sources of knowledge of those who have come and gone. There is a major hole in this forum dealing with the offset tractors that will be very hard to fill. Unfortunately, finding info can be difficult due to the volume and the fact that not everyone sees the need to title their topic in a way that makes it easy to find later. Honestly, after many years of reading I still don't mind repetitive posts. The same posts can and will continue to be put up as new people enter the forum community. Better that than a stale forum with fewer and fewer people reading and talking. If you don't like a post...don't answer it. I really don't see what gives anybody on this forum the right to start publically ripping on anyone else just because they could have used the archives.
