i am looking at buying a tractor with a d239 in it it is describe as having a knock never owned an ih and i dont know anything about them im wondering if these motors had any common problems or if a set of rods and mains would more then likely fix the noise any input appreciated thanks

Not likely. I would pull oil filter off and take a look for bearing material. If you find some, look for a complete engine tear down.

D239 is a German made IH engine. The knock could be the balances box is wore or a tooth is broke off the crankshaft balancer gear. Let engine set for a day or two then remove the oil drain plug slowly to see if there is any anti freeze in the pan.If so a rod bearing could be spun. They are very good engines for the most part.
