I noticed lately, as i was blowing snow, that my pto would slow down when i got in deep snow instead of breaking the shear bolt or bogging the tractor down. Today it slowed down and stopped. It will not turn on at all now. Does it sound like the clutch is smoked in the pto assy? or is it somthing bigger? Whats it cost roughly to have one re-built? I never had this problem with my tractors before. Please help guys, this tractor is my work horse and farming season is comming.

First thing you need to check is the PTO clutch operating pressure. (It was slipping, so it doesn't look too good, then a pin in the valve MAY have broken to finish it off.)

There's a test port in the PTO unit, it takes a special adapter to connect a gauge, which can be made by drilling a small hole in a short bolt that fits the port, then brazing a coupling to the head of the bolt to connect the gauge to.

I can't remember the pressure, offhand, I'm sure someone will post it, OBVIOUSLY having a shop manual would be a good thing, going into this!

To test the pressure like bob said ya need the CORRECT FITTING not some bolt . This fitting can be ordered from Case I H and you will need a length of small Hyd. hose and a GOOD gauge that will read up to 600 lbs. . The part # for the special fitting to test the pressure is 384328R1. IF you own a I H tractor from the 706 on up you should have atleast on and for 86 series on up ya need TWO and two gauges . Myself i set the clutch lock up pressure to 265 - 280 on the higher Hp, tractors > also this test on the pressure must be done with the hyd. oil at NO LESS then 150 degrees . Yea i know it will take some time to get everything warmed up to that temp. Even with my flow rater to get it warmed up takes the better part of half and hour running the hyd. fluid thru the flow rater . As to the cost well it has been a while since i bought parts to do one . I use to charge three and a half hours to pull rebuild and set one up and i always installed the Hd. clutch pack and i am trying to remember what the normal bills came to . , i am thinking that it was not over 250 when i was doing them . BUt times have changed and everybody wants to get rich over night now .
