H Carb leak

I just rebuild my carb on my H and I have a slow leak from the weep hole on the bottom. I have checked the float height and seat twice now. I also resurfaced the face of the carb with 800 grit to be sure its not leaking past the gasket. When its running I have no leaks. Any ideas? Tx Steve

Did you use a tisco or TSC carb kit? If you did the needle and seats that come with them are not the best. They have a tendency to leak from what i have encountered. You can order just the needle and seat from a few companies. if you have the float set correct a different set may be your best bet.

Is that one of those rubber tipped needles?? Does it also have the little spring on it so it will not get stuck?? If you answer yes to either or boh do this and it will probably help. Oh you do also know you should always turn the gas off when you park a tractor right?? Pull that needle back out drop it in the seat and tap on it a few times that will put a set in it and most likely stop your problem

The kit was an a&i. It was very poor quality. The choke butterfly was not even close to fitting. I had to trim the gasket to get it to fit. Who would you buy the needle and seat from?

It is a rubber tippped needle with no spring. I will try the seat trick. I have never turned my fuel off. It has not been a problem in the past. My sediment bowl shut off valve dose not close all the way. Any idea where I can buy a quality one?

A good auto parts store should have a good sediment bowl assembly. I get a lot of stuff from O'Reilly's auto parts and so far all the sediment bowls I have got from them are good. As for shutting the gas off it is always a good idea to do so to keep from getting gas in your oil and gas in the oil can/will lead to a blown engine.

The one from CaseIH leaks also. I always coin the seat,( do not tap on the rubber tipped needle) with a pintle from an injectin nozzle tip. Has correct angle. If you have good eyes you may even be able to see that the seat is not round. Also, the gasket on the nozzle and the one on seat itself can leak, a very carefully applied speck of locktite teflon hydraulic sealer can cure that. Yes, shut off the gas to be safe if left for any length of time. I think the ethanol in the gas does harden the rubber (viton) seat over time also.

I have tapped on the rubber tipped ones for years now and learned that from a guy who did carbs for a living but he like many I knew has long since pass on

Ok, I can see where that may help a hardend rubber tip but it sure won't help the oblong holes that I see in the new seats.

Why did you think you needed to resurface the face of the carb? I've rebuilt countless H carbs and never have I encountered one that was warped, and aside from that, if the gasoline leaks past that gasket, the carb is already flooded.

Doesn't really harden the tips it more puts a set in the tip so it fits in deeper and tighter and will some times takes care of poor drilled holes that you see now days

When IH came with the 4 and 560's, they had a larger fuel tank than previous model tractors and that extra head of fuel on the needle and seat seemed to cause a lot of leaking carburetors when the farmer filled that tank up. IH then introduced the viton tipped needle and seat which did a very good job of holding . This needle and seat was approved for all previous tractors using the IH carburetors. Many years later, the quality of that needle and seat deteriorated and has never been the same since.I have been repairing these carburetors for over 50 years now and I think I have seen "most" everything that can cause them to leak, stick closed, clog up or whatever. That being said though, when one no longer learns something new he no longer is doing anything.
